The 3-Phase Learning System

Our structured approach helps you explore your interests, develop your skills, and grow as a scientist through hands-on learning and supportive collaboration.

Foundation Phase

Summer through September
Goal: Learn the fundamentals and build a solid knowledge foundation in the topics that interest you most.

Your Learning Journey:

  • Access Learning Modules released by our Subject Directors and Event Managers
  • Study from curated resources: videos, websites, and textbooks
  • Follow clear learning specifications for each event
  • Create and upload your notes, concept maps, diagrams, and learning materials
  • Meet with EMs and SDs throughout the summer to get guidance and support
  • Connect with team members and build lasting friendships
Important Note: Due to capacity constraints, having a strong understanding of the content is crucial to secure your spot on the team.

Learning Assessment I

Early October

Show what you've learned! Demonstrate your summer learning progress in our comprehensive in-person assessment. This diagnostic helps us understand your readiness for the collaborative phase.

Collaborative Learning Phase

Early October through Winter Break
Goal: Apply your knowledge through collaboration, practice, and real competition experience.

Your Team Experience:

  • Participate in weekly event meetings led by experienced EMs & SDs
  • Engage in collaborative discussions and knowledge sharing with your peers
  • Experience our House Cup system for friendly internal competition
  • Compete in multiple invitational competitions
  • Maintain strong performance to earn selection for competitions
  • Develop test-taking strategies and gain competition experience
Keep Growing: Consistent effort and improvement are important for invitational selection and continued participation.

Before Winter Break

Another chance to show your growth! This comprehensive assessment determines your regional competition placement. Show off what you've learned through collaboration and practice.

After Winter Break through States
Goal: Refine your skills and represent Bronx Science at regional and state competitions.

Your Competition Experience:

  • Work closely with your event partner
  • Prepare intensively for regional and state competitions
  • Learn advanced strategies and techniques
  • Represent Bronx Science Olympiad at competitions
  • Strive for personal bests and team success
Special Opportunity: Only a select number of dedicated students earn spots on our competition teams.
